Origin Story offers an afro-Futuristic reimagining of the Statue of Liberty, examining the historical, political, and social forces that shaped one of the world’s most enduring symbols of freedom. Through fiber, collage, and sculptural elements, the multidisciplinary installation draws inspiration from the original concepts of French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and the visual culture of the era in which the monument was conceived.

Key features of the installation include:

• A fiber art gown created in celebration of the Statue of Liberty

• Five original collage works inspired by illustrations from the late 19th century

• 250 handcrafted paper and fiber flowers, created in recognition of the nation’s 250th birthday

Together, these elements create an immersive experience that centers liberty, identity, and the evolving meaning of national symbols. Origin Story will be on view at Understudy in Denver, Colorado, from June 18 through July 19, 2026, with an opening reception on Thursday, June 18 from 6–9pm featuring a special performance by Acoustic Standard.
